Social Anxiety Disorder/Social Phobia

While Social Anxiety Disorder is much more well known than the other disorders we have included on this site, we included it because it often occurs with selective mutism. Social Anxiety Disorder is also sometimes called Social Phobia and is the most common anxiety disorder. While Selective Mutism makes it hard for someone to communicate with another person, Social Anxiety Disorder takes things a little further. Due to the fact that Social Anxiety Disorder can also make it very difficult to communicate with other people, when someone has both it can be difficult to know which of the two disorders are being experienced in any given moment, though with Social Anxiety Disorder the person can usually speak out loud to people much easier than someone with Selective Mutism.
